Smoke Rise is Kinnelon's best-known community, a gated, heavily wooded residential area that began as the estate of Francis S. Kinney and developed into one of the borough's most sought-after addresses for executive-level homes. Fayson Lakes, another signature section, clusters homes around a series of small lakes and retains the character of its origins as a summer-cottage colony. Beyond these, Kinnelon is organized around several other lake associations and wooded residential streets, giving each part of the borough its own shoreline or forested identity rather than a single uniform subdivision pattern.

The borough has no significant commercial center of its own, so residents do their shopping and dining in neighboring Butler and Riverdale while enjoying a calm, low-density setting at home. Lake recreation is woven into daily life, with residents swimming, boating, and gathering at the borough's private lake beaches in warmer months. The community is regarded as safe and family-friendly, and its combination of strong schools, wooded lots, and proximity to New York City draws commuters who want suburban space without sacrificing access to the city.

Kinnelon is served by the Kinnelon Public Schools, a K–12 district of approximately 2,200 students that includes Kinnelon High School. The district is a central draw for families moving to the borough, complementing its reputation as a strong, well-regarded suburban school system. The Smoke Rise Nursery School, operating in the community since 1955, provides an established private preschool option for younger children. High school students in the borough also have access to the vocational and specialized programs offered through Morris County, and the district's small scale keeps class communities relatively intimate by New Jersey suburban standards.

Kinnelon is a commuter-oriented suburb, though it is reached primarily by road. New Jersey Transit provides bus service through the area, and the nearest rail station is in Lincoln Park to the east, offering a link into the New York region. Drivers use nearby Route 23 and the Interstate 287 corridor to reach employment centers in Morris County and beyond, with Manhattan about 33 miles to the east. The borough's location balances a secluded, wooded setting with workable access to the wider northern New Jersey and New York metropolitan area, though a personal vehicle is typical for most local errands.

Silas Condict County Park, managed by the Morris County Park Commission, offers meandering trails, overlooks, fishing, horseback riding, paddle boating, and seasonal cross-country skiing and sledding. The borough's private lakes provide swimming and boating for residents through their lake associations, and the surrounding Highlands woodlands offer hiking and nature access close to home.
