Roxbury is best understood through its hamlets. Succasunna is the civic center, home to the municipal complex, the public library, and Roxbury High School, with a dense grid of established streets. Landing fronts Lake Hopatcong and retains a lake-community feel, with marinas, older cottages, and the Landing Road commercial area. Ledgewood grew around the Route 10 retail corridor and its mall, while Kenvil and Port Morris trace their origins to the region's iron-mining and railroad past. Berkshire Valley, to the northwest, is the most rural and wooded section, with larger lots and a quieter, more removed character. Together they offer a genuine range of settings within a single municipality.

Roxbury is served by the Roxbury Township School District, a K-12 system of seven schools headquartered in Succasunna. Students attend elementary schools distributed across the township's hamlets and progress to Roxbury High School, which anchors the district's athletics and performing-arts programs. The district's size and facilities support a broad extracurricular calendar, and it draws students from within the township as well as, historically, some neighboring sending communities. School quality and the district's central role in community life are frequently cited reasons families choose Roxbury, though specific school assignment depends on address.

Roxbury sits at the intersection of three major corridors: Interstate 80, U.S. Route 46, and New Jersey Route 10, which together provide direct highway access east toward the Morris County office market and New York City, and west toward the Delaware Water Gap. Route 206 passes nearby to the west, linking the area to points north and south. NJ Transit offers commuter rail from the Mount Arlington station and bus service along the main corridors, giving non-driving options into Newark and Manhattan. The township's location makes it one of the more convenient western Morris communities for both local and regional commuting.

Lake Hopatcong is Roxbury's defining recreational asset, offering boating, fishing, and shoreline access through the Landing section and its marinas. Horseshoe Lake, an inland municipal lake in Succasunna, provides swimming, a beach, and walking paths for day-to-day recreation. The township maintains a network of parks, sports fields, and trails, including the wooded tracts toward Berkshire Valley. In winter, the nearby mountains of Sussex and Warren counties offer skiing within a short drive. The combination of two lakes, extensive parkland, and quick access to the rural northwest of the state gives Roxbury an unusually broad outdoor menu for a suburban township.
