Farmingdale is a half-square-mile Monmouth County borough, completely surrounded by Howell Township, which it separated from in 1903. Main Street, where County Routes 524 and 547 meet, is the center of town, with the Wainwright House and Museum, Harvest at 83 Main Street, and Connie's Restaurant, run by the Mandica family since 1972.

The town grew up around marl, a natural fertilizer found here in 1830, and the borough held its 53rd Memorial Day parade in 2026. In a straight line, Allaire State Park is about 4 miles away, Garden State Parkway Exit 100 about 3.8 miles, and the beach in Belmar about 7 to 8 miles.
