Lavallette is a beach borough on the Barnegat Peninsula in Ocean County, with the Atlantic Ocean on its east side and Barnegat Bay on its west. It covers about 0.82 square miles of land and borders only Toms River Township. The Barnegat Land Improvement Company mapped the tract as "Lavallette City by the Sea" in 1878, naming it for U.S. Navy Admiral Elie A. F. LaVallette, and the borough was incorporated in 1887.

The ocean side has a boardwalk and nine guarded ocean beaches in summer, with set areas for surfing and surf fishing. The bay side is the town's park strip: tennis, pickleball, basketball, bocce and shuffleboard courts at Magee Avenue, playgrounds, a boat ramp, and the Centennial Gazebo and Gardens at Philadelphia Avenue, where free Movies on the Bay run on summer Tuesdays. Route 35, called Grand Central Avenue in town, carries the shops.
