Barnegat Light is a small borough at the northern tip of Long Beach Island in Ocean County, with the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Barnegat Bay to the west and Barnegat Inlet to the north. Its landmark is Barnegat Lighthouse, known locally as Old Barney, a 163-foot tower designed by George G. Meade and first lit in 1859. It stands in Barnegat Lighthouse State Park, which adds a short maritime forest trail and an interpretive center.

The town keeps a working waterfront. Viking Village, a commercial fishing dock since the 1920s, still lands sea scallops and fish, runs dock tours and hosts seasonal art, craft and antique shows. Around it are ocean beaches, a guarded bay beach at 25th Street, tennis courts, a skate park and a dog park, and the Barnegat Light Museum in the town's 1903 one-room schoolhouse.
