Berkeley Township stretches across central Ocean County from Barnegat Bay and the barrier island west into the Pine Barrens, and about 72 percent of its land is in the Pinelands National Reserve. Island Beach State Park, the largest undeveloped barrier island beach in New Jersey, lies within the township, and Double Trouble State Park preserves the former company town of the Double Trouble company in the pines.

Its communities include Bayville, Pinewald, Manitou Park and Glen Cove, plus Holiday City and Silver Ridge Park, a group of age-restricted adult communities, each with its own homeowners association. Pinewald dates to a 1920s resort plan on Crystal Lake. About 89 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, by Census count.
