Colts Neck Township covers about 31 square miles in central Monmouth County, between Freehold Township, Holmdel, Marlboro, Middletown, Tinton Falls, Wall and Howell. It began in 1847 as Atlantic Township and took the name Colts Neck in 1962. The township has been known for horse breeding since the 1700s, and the Farmland Preservation Committee has protected nearly 1,000 acres.

There is no public water or sewer here, so most homes sit on lots of 2 acres or more: colonials and ranches from the 1950s through the 1970s, and larger houses and estates built since the 1980s, among working horse farms. Landmarks include Laird & Company in Scobeyville, the maker of Laird's Applejack, the Bucks Mill area, the historic Phalanx section, and Hominy Hill Golf Course, a Robert Trent Jones design run by the county park system.
