Englishtown is a small borough of about half a square mile in western Monmouth County, surrounded on every side by Manalapan Township. It grew as a trading center on the old road between Monmouth Court House, now Freehold, and Middlesex County, and many of the houses along Main Street were built in the late 1800s, with a few dating to the 1700s.

Its landmark is the Village Inn at Main and Water Streets, a colonial tavern whose oldest part dates to about 1732. Local tradition holds that George Washington used it as his headquarters after the Battle of Monmouth in 1778 (a Library of Congress building survey found no documents that confirm or rule this out), and today the Battleground Historical Society uses it as its headquarters and opens it for tours. A Veterans' Monument pocket park now stands where the old town hall was.
