The Short Take

Old Village At A Glance

In the mid-1800s many houses went up along the road to Chandler's Dock, now Fair Haven Road, which was then the heart of town. The side streets (Clay, DeNormandie and Gillespie) and nearby parts of today's River Road were built up at the same time. Because so many 19th-century buildings still stand there, this part of Fair Haven is popularly known as the Old Village. It is now inside a historic district.

Known For A River Town

Jeremiah Chandler built the town's first permanent house on the riverbank near the foot of Fair Haven Road in 1816. By 1850 Chandler's Dock stood next to the site of today's town dock, and steamboats on the New York to Red Bank run stopped there to carry oysters and other river harvest. The steamboat Albertina appears on the borough seal.
