Interlaken is a small borough of about a third of a square mile in Monmouth County, set between two arms of Deal Lake, with Asbury Park, Allenhurst, Loch Arbour and Ocean Township around it. Dr. Francis Weld named his farm here after Interlaken in Switzerland, which also sits between two lakes, and his land company laid out avenues named for English lakes and cross streets named for Hebridean islands. It became a borough in 1922.

The borough was planned as a residential community and still is: homes range from Victorian-era cottages to present-day houses, nearly all of them single-family, along tree-lined streets that have earned a Tree City USA designation for 35 years. Deal Lake wraps around the town, Interlaken Park sits in the middle, and the ocean is a short trip east.
