Lakehurst is a small Ocean County borough of about 0.9 square miles, surrounded on every side by Manchester Township. Its centerpiece is Lake Horicon, a 63-acre, stream-fed cedar-water lake with a guarded swimming beach in summer, a lakeside park with a pavilion and playground, and a nature trail that crosses a footbridge to a small island.

The town calls itself "A Small Town with a Big History." It grew as a railroad village, became a winter resort around the Pine Tree Inn, and gave its name to the nearby Naval Air Station, where the Navy's airship program was based and where the Hindenburg crashed in 1937. That story is told at the Lakehurst Historical Society Museum in Old St. John's Church, built in 1874, a short walk from the downtown shops and restaurants on Union Avenue and the older, larger homes along tree-lined Union Avenue.
