Long Beach Township covers most of Long Beach Island, the barrier island between Barnegat Bay and the Atlantic Ocean in southern Ocean County. It is not one town center but a string of beach sections: Loveladies and High Bar Harbor at the north end, North Beach, Brant Beach, Beach Haven Crest, Spray Beach, North Beach Haven and the other sections in the long middle stretch, and Holgate south of Beach Haven. Barnegat Light, Harvey Cedars, Surf City, Ship Bottom and Beach Haven are separate boroughs.

The township has about 12 miles of ocean beach, guarded since 1936 by its own beach patrol, plus bay beaches, kayak access, a nature trail and courts at the north, middle and south ends. Most of Holgate is a wildlife preserve within the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge. The whole island is mapped as a special flood hazard area.
