Marlboro is a township of about 30 square miles in northwestern Monmouth County, named for the marl beds that farmers once dug here for fertilizer. Before World War II it was the nation's largest potato grower, and from the 1950s on its farms gave way to neighborhoods, including the Morganville and Robertsville sections. A few working farms and historic buildings along Main Street near Route 79 recall the older village.

Developments of the 1980s and early 1990s were mostly four- and five-bedroom houses, and later building shifted toward larger estate homes, with about 93 percent of occupied homes owner-occupied. Big Brook, on the Colts Neck line, is regarded as one of the top three dinosaur fossil sites in the state, and the Henry Hudson Trail and Big Brook Park give the township long stretches of trail and open space.
