Matawan is a borough of about 2.3 square miles in the northwest corner of Monmouth County, near Raritan Bay, bordering Aberdeen, the Morganville section of Marlboro and Old Bridge. It was settled by the Dutch in the 17th century, grew as a port called Middletown Point on Matawan Creek, and became a borough in 1895. The 1723 Burrowes Mansion museum on Main Street marks a 1778 Revolutionary War skirmish, and a mural on Matawan Creek recalls the shark attacks of 1916.

Main Street and the streets around it are lined with 18th, 19th and early 20th century houses in Georgian, Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne and Second Empire styles. Newer neighborhoods offer single-family houses, townhouses and apartment buildings. Lake Lefferts has a boat launch and paddleboat and kayak rentals, Memorial Park overlooks Lake Matawan, and Matawan Day fills Main Street each October.
