Middletown Township is the largest municipality in Monmouth County by population, covering about 41 square miles of land along Raritan Bay and Sandy Hook Bay, with the Sandy Hook peninsula also inside its borders. It is a township of distinct sections, including Belford, Fairview, Leonardo, Lincroft, Navesink, North Middletown and Port Monmouth, each a census-designated place, plus older names such as Chapel Hill, River Plaza and New Monmouth.

Settled in the 1660s and formed in 1693, Middletown keeps its colonial core in the Middletown Village Historic District along Kings Highway, listed on the National Register in 1974. Open space is a big part of the township: Thompson Park in Lincroft, Huber Woods Park, Deep Cut Gardens, Tatum Park, part of Hartshorne Woods Park, and Poricy Park, known for Cretaceous marine fossils in Poricy Brook. About 78 percent of the homes are single-family detached houses, and the median year built is 1970 (Census Bureau survey, 2020 to 2024).
