Neptune City is a borough of about 0.9 square miles in Monmouth County, bordered by Avon-by-the-Sea, Bradley Beach and Neptune Township, with Memorial Park along the Shark River. It was incorporated in 1881, and its original boundaries took in what is now Avon-by-the-Sea and the southern part of Bradley Beach, until Avon became its own borough in 1900 and the eastern section joined Bradley Beach in 1907. The name comes from Neptune, the Roman god of the sea.

Route 35 runs through the borough. Its first factory, the Steiner and Sons pajama factory, was built in 1891, and in 1922 Babe Ruth and other New York Yankees played an exhibition game at the ballpark between the company's two factories. Today the borough has four parks, a community center with a full gym at 117 Third Avenue, and its own library at Borough Hall.
