Old Bridge Township covers about 38 square miles of eastern Middlesex County, reaching from the South River to Raritan Bay, across the water from Staten Island. It was incorporated in 1869 as Madison Township and took the name Old Bridge by referendum in 1975. Farms gave way to new neighborhoods in a building boom after 1950, and the township is now made up of named sections, including Laurence Harbor on the bay, Madison Park, Brownville, Cheesequake, Browntown and South Old Bridge.

The bayfront is Old Bridge Waterfront Park, 71 acres with 1.3 miles of boardwalk and walkways from Paul's Beach to Margaret's Creek, fishing piers, playgrounds and a kayak launch at Whale Creek. Cheesequake State Park, opened in 1940, protects 1,610 acres of salt and freshwater marsh, Atlantic white cedar swamp and hardwood forest, with about nine miles of trails, campsites and Hooks Creek Lake.

Is Old Bridge Township the same as the Old Bridge section of East Brunswick?

No. Old Bridge Township is its own municipality. The historic village of Old Bridge, named for the first bridge across the South River, is in neighboring East Brunswick. Why was Old Bridge called Madison Township?

The township was incorporated as Madison Township on March 2, 1869, from part of South Amboy Township. Voters changed the name to Old Bridge Township in a referendum on November 5, 1975, by 7,150 votes to 4,888, partly to avoid confusion with the Borough of Madison in Morris County. Source: Wikipedia, Old Bridge Township.

What ZIP codes does Old Bridge, NJ use?

Several: 08857 (Old Bridge), 08859 (Parlin), 08879 (Laurence Harbor), and parts of 07735 (Cliffwood Beach) and 07747 (Matawan). Because of that, some Old Bridge addresses carry a Parlin, Laurence Harbor or Matawan mailing name, so check the municipality on the property record. Source: Wikipedia, Old Bridge Township.
