Plumsted Township is the northwestern corner of Ocean County, a mostly rural township of about 39 square miles bordering Jackson, Manchester and Upper Freehold townships and three Burlington County towns. It was formed in 1845 from part of Jackson Township, while the area was still in Monmouth County, and joined the new Ocean County in 1850. Its main village is New Egypt, a census-designated place with Oakford Lake at its center, and the township also takes in smaller places such as Archertown, Hockamick, Head of Woods and Woodruff.

Open land is a big part of the township. Colliers Mills Wildlife Management Area, more than 12,900 acres run by the state's Division of Fish and Wildlife, lies partly in Plumsted, and Laurita Winery is here as well. The township's own school district runs from pre-kindergarten through New Egypt High School, and the Ocean County Library has a Plumsted branch in New Egypt. About 81 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, according to the Census Bureau.
