Washington Street Historic District At A Glance

The Washington Street Historic District is one of Red Bank's two locally designated historic districts, covering Washington Street between Front Street and Wallace Street. A 1981 county survey called it the earliest residential area in Red Bank: the north end of Washington Street was laid out around 1850, and the district was fully built by 1880.

Known For Built Before The Car

The district lies east of the Broad Street commercial center and once housed people who worked downtown and in the shops along Mechanic Street. Its narrow, tree-lined streets and closely spaced houses reflect a neighborhood built for walking, before the automobile and the streetcar.
