Shrewsbury Borough is a mostly residential town of about 2.2 square miles in eastern Monmouth County, directly south of Red Bank, bordering Eatontown, Little Silver, Oceanport, Red Bank, Shrewsbury Township and Tinton Falls. The borough says Shrewsbury was settled in 1662 as one of the Two Towns of the Navesink. The old Shrewsbury Township once stretched across most of Monmouth and Ocean counties, and the borough split from it in 1926. It is a separate town from today's much smaller Shrewsbury Township.

The heart of its history is the Four Corners, where Broad Street (Route 35) meets Sycamore Avenue. The Shrewsbury Historic District there, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, has 47 contributing buildings, including three churches, the Allen House and the Wardell House. The Shrewsbury Historical Society runs a museum and research library at the municipal center on Sycamore Avenue. Along Route 35, The Grove at Shrewsbury is an outdoor shopping center of about 40 stores.
