Living In Shrewsbury Township

Shrewsbury Township is New Jersey's smallest municipality by area, about 0.1 square miles in Monmouth County between Tinton Falls and the separate Borough of Shrewsbury. It is made up of three streets, Crawford Street, Barker Avenue and Belshaw Avenue. Formed in 1693, the original township covered almost 1,000 square miles, and 74 municipalities were later carved from it.

The land that remains was once Camp Vail, 265 homes built for families of Fort Monmouth employees. After World War II the families bought the land from the Army, and it became the Alfred Vail Mutual Association, one of New Jersey's first cooperative housing organizations.
