Surf City is an oceanfront borough on Long Beach Island in southern Ocean County, with the Atlantic Ocean on its east side and Barnegat Bay on its west. It covers about three quarters of a square mile of land along Long Beach Boulevard (County Route 607), bordered by Ship Bottom and Long Beach Township. The town was founded as Long Beach City in 1894 and took the name Surf City in 1899.

About 91 percent of the homes are single-family detached houses (Census Bureau survey, 2020 to 2024). Guarded ocean beaches run from about South 2nd Street to North 24th Street in summer, with fishing and surfing areas set aside, and there is a guarded bay beach at 16th Street and a municipal boat ramp at Division Street. History runs deep here too: one of the first big boarding hotels on the Jersey Shore, the Mansion of Health, stood in present-day Surf City until it burned in 1874, and the bayside cove at the foot of South First Street is still called Mansion Cove.
