Florence Township sits on the Delaware River in northern Burlington County, across the river from Pennsylvania's Bucks County. It was incorporated in 1872 and named for Florence, Italy, and it takes in two historic river villages, Florence and Roebling, along with places such as Bustleton and Florence Station. Florence was laid out after the Florence City Company bought 600 acres in 1849, and it grew around the Florence Iron Works, a foundry on the river from 1857 that R.D. Wood bought in 1867.

Roebling was laid out from 1905 as a company town beside the John A. Roebling's Sons Company's new mill, the Kinkora Works, which made steel wire and cable for bridges. The company built 750 brick homes along with an inn, a bank, an auditorium, a post office and other buildings that still stand, and the village was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The Roebling Museum, in the mill's former gatehouse at 100 Second Avenue, opened in 2010.
